what is the best acoustic electric guitar to travel with?

my friend just had his guitar smashed doing mission work in cambodia. He always loved his ovation (but should have invested in a hard case). We are all chipping in to buy him another guitar for $200-$300. I just was wondering if there is a guitar thats better for where he will be going, from africa to cambodia etc than the ovation, or is the plastic back on these best for his needs?

thanks, I forgot to mention that it has to be acoustic electric, it will be his only guitar for worship and traveling, so he needs it to plug in to power too

I’ve used an Ibanez Daytripper as a travel guitar and it’s by far the best small guitar I’ve every played. For a couple years I used a Martin Backpacker, but the stick-like body doesn’t produce much sound and it’s more like playing a home-made instrument than a true guitar. But the Daytripper feels much closer to a full-size guitar and sounds nearly as good. It’s also unusually sturdy for a smaller guitar, some of which feel more like toys than musical instruments. The neck is very thin and playable, the action (the distance between the strings and the fretboard) is low, and it plays like a dream. In fact, I’ve begun playing it more often than my big ol’ guitar.
